How do you explain the power of 5G to people who don't speak in bits and bytes?

That was the challenge facing Cisco's 5G RuralFirst project in Orkney — one of the UK's most ambitious trials exploring how next-generation connectivity could transform remote communities.

Rather than talk about technology, we chose to tell a human story.

We created Tapestry — a living portrait of Orkney woven together from the sounds of the islands themselves. From wind turbines and salmon farms to wildlife, landscapes and local voices, every layer of the composition was connected through the power of 5G.

The idea was simple: if 5G is about bringing people, places and possibilities together, then the project itself should do the same.

Working with local communities and composer Erland Cooper, we transformed real-time sounds captured across the islands into a unique musical experience. 5G became both the subject and the medium — transmitting sounds live from Orkney to the studio where the piece was created.

To extend the experience, we produced a limited-edition vinyl recording of the composition, which was distributed to journalists and key influencers. The project was also broadcast live on BBC Radio 6 Music, allowing audiences across the country to experience the performance as it happened.

The result was more than a demonstration of technology. It was a powerful expression of how connectivity can strengthen communities, unlock opportunity and bring even the most remote places closer together.
